SIA Paving handles asphalt driveway paving for homes in Sellersburg and the towns around it. We pave new asphalt driveways, and we turn gravel driveways into asphalt. Extensions to an existing asphalt driveway are part of the work too. Every job starts below the surface, with grading and a compacted stone base under the hot-mix asphalt.
Grading for drainage is part of the paving job, so rain runs off and stays out of the base. Our own pavers lay the hot-mix, and skid steer planers handle the asphalt milling when an old driveway comes out. Driveways are one part of our asphalt paving around Sellersburg. Call or text (812) 913-8411, and we look at the job and put the quote in writing.

A gravel driveway ruts in wet weather and throws dust in dry weather. Potholes keep coming back after hard rain. Paving it gives you a hard, smooth surface that sheds water.
The ground under the gravel decides how much work comes first. A state asphalt pavement association's driveway guide spells out the steps. The soil should be graded smooth and cleared of organic material, and weak spots dug out and replaced.
From there, the stone base gets graded for drainage and compacted. Then our pavers lay the hot-mix asphalt over it.
The same driveway guide gives a starting point for a typical home driveway. It says 6 to 8 inches of crushed stone base is usually enough. On top goes a 2-inch bottom course of asphalt, then a 1.5-inch surface course.
The guide also says to study the site first: the soil and the loads the driveway will carry. Heavy trucks or weak soil can call for a thicker section. It tells homeowners to get thicknesses and drainage spelled out in writing, too.
The USDA soil survey for Clark County rates the main soils around Sellersburg very limited for local roads. Frost action and low strength are the reasons it gives for nearly all of them. On ground like that, the compacted stone base and the drainage carry the driveway. The asphalt industry's technical institute recommends a 1.5 to 3 percent slope across paved surfaces so water runs off.
Sellersburg's development ordinance requires an improvement location permit for new driveways and curb cuts outside platted subdivisions. The ordinance adds that a driveway onto a county road or a state highway needs that road owner's permit too. Residential driveways in town must be paved with an all-weather material such as asphalt. In the agricultural district, that rule covers the first 30 feet from the right-of-way.
On a new build, fill dirt around the house tends to settle. The same driveway guide says waiting a few months before paving is sometimes wise. Indiana law also asks for at least two full working days' notice to Indiana 811 before digging or grading. Utilities then mark their buried lines before the base work starts.
The driveway guide says to pave only in good weather and to skip cold, rainy days. NOAA normals for nearby Jeffersonville make April to June the wettest stretch of the year. On paving day, our pavers lay the hot-mix asphalt over the compacted base. New asphalt then needs time to cure before its first sealcoating.

Where the job calls for it, old asphalt is milled off and the base is graded and compacted. Then our pavers lay the hot-mix asphalt, or the sealcoat goes on.
A parking lot we paved gets its striping once the asphalt is ready for it. We tell you when the new surface can take traffic.
