Asphalt Driveways
We pave new asphalt driveways and turn gravel driveways into asphalt. The ground is graded and the stone base compacted before the hot-mix goes down.

Floyds Knobs sits up in the Knobs, about 300 to 400 feet above downtown New Albany, per USGS elevation data. The USDA soil survey maps more than a third of the land here on slopes of 12 percent or steeper. On a drive that climbs, rain runs down the asphalt and eats at the edges. Most soils here also rate high for frost action: they heave as they freeze and soften as they thaw.
Floyds Knobs is part of the SIA Paving service area, about 12 road miles from our shop in Sellersburg. Here we do asphalt driveway paving, gravel to asphalt conversions included, along with private road paving. Each job starts with grading so water runs off, then a compacted crushed stone base under the hot-mix asphalt. Call or text (812) 913-8411, and we look at the job and put the quote in writing.

Paoli Pike and Old Vincennes Road both climb from New Albany into Floyds Knobs. Floyd Central High School sits on Old Vincennes Road, and US 150 crosses town on its way to Greenville. The biggest soil map unit here is Gilwood and Wrays silt loams on 12 to 25 percent slopes. In the Gilwood soils, the survey puts hard bedrock about 20 to 40 inches down.
The USDA survey rates the main soils in Floyds Knobs very limited for local roads and streets. Frost action is a reason on every one of them, and slope or low strength on most. Low strength means soil that gives under a load, so the base on top has to carry it.
Spickert silt loam is common on the gentler slopes. It has a dense layer called a fragipan about 2 to 3 feet down. From November into May, water collects above that layer. Grading that sheds water before it soaks in is where a sound drive starts.
Census estimates put Floyds Knobs at about 4,500 people in about 2,000 homes. About nine in ten are single-family houses, and the median home was built in 1993. The 2000s added the most, close to a third of the homes here. The township that holds most of Floyds Knobs grew about 10 percent between the 2010 and 2020 censuses.
If your drive went down with a house from those years, check the base before you pick a fix. When the surface is worn but the base holds, asphalt resurfacing puts a new layer on top. We mill the old surface first where the edges or the grade need it. When the base has failed, the drive gets rebuilt from the base up.
A newer drive that is still sound may only need sealcoating. A sealcoat protects the surface, but it does not fix a failed base. We tell you which job your drive needs after we look at it.
Floyds Knobs has no town government, so Floyd County offices answer most questions here. Building and Development Services handles zoning and building questions for the county. For work that touches a county road, the county Department of Highway and Public Works is the office to ask.
Floyd County runs its stormwater program under a state permit. A project that disturbs more than one acre needs the county's Quality Management Permit.
In the county's business zones, the zoning ordinance says parking lots must be paved, with each space striped. It does not allow an existing gravel lot to be expanded. Our parking lot paving includes striping the lot we pave.
Where a drive crosses a roadside ditch, a pipe called a driveway tile carries the water under it. Floyd County's clean-out agreement calls that pipe the owner's driveway tile. If water stands at the foot of your drive, the tile may be clogged.
The county can unclog driveway tiles along county and subdivision roads in its stormwater area. The owner signs an agreement first, and the cleaning runs on the county's schedule. Get a clogged tile cleared before new asphalt goes down. When we pave, we grade the drive so water heads for the ditch instead of down the asphalt.
Along the creek bottoms, the soil survey maps ground that floods now and then. In a mapped flood hazard area, Floyd County requires a Floodplain Development Permit before grading or road building starts. The ordinance's definition of development leaves out the resurfacing of roads. Look the address up on FEMA's flood map first.
