Asphalt Milling
We mill worn asphalt off before an overlay or a full repave. Our two 40-inch skid steer planers handle edges and driveways, and big lots get a large milling machine.

Asphalt resurfacing lays a new layer of hot-mix asphalt over pavement that is worn on top but still sound underneath. The trade calls that new layer an asphalt overlay. SIA Paving resurfaces driveways, parking lots and private roads about 45 miles around our Sellersburg shop.
The base under the old asphalt decides the job. If the base still holds, an overlay gives you a new surface on the pavement you already have. Where the grade or the edges need it, we start with asphalt milling to take the old surface down. We look at the job and put the quote in writing.

An overlay fits pavement that has aged on top but stays firm underneath. INDOT, Indiana's transportation department, adopted a 1 to 10 rating guide for asphalt roads that local governments manage. In that guide, surface wear on a sound structure calls for a sealcoat or a thin overlay under 2 inches. Raveling, where stone comes loose from the top, is one sign of that wear.
Alligator cracking is the sign to watch. It is a web of small, connected cracks that breaks the surface into pieces. The guide ties it to traffic wear and, very often, poor support from the base or the soil below. Once it covers more than a quarter of the surface, the guide calls for reconstruction with extensive base repair.
An overlay on top of that damage leaves the weak base in place. Where the base has failed, we quote full-depth removal and new pavement from the base up. At a home, that means asphalt driveway paving, with base prep and grading before the new asphalt.
A new layer adds height. At the garage floor or the street edge, that height can leave a lip or send water the wrong way. So where an edge needs it, we mill the old surface down first. The new asphalt then meets that edge at the right height.
We mill with two 40-inch skid steer planer attachments. When a whole lot or a long road needs milling, we bring in a large milling machine. The rating guide says milling off the damaged layer extends the life of an overlay. For deep ruts, it calls for milling the old surface or rebuilding the roadbed before resurfacing.
Asphalt trade guidance for driveways says the old surface should be clean and dry before the overlay goes down. Our own pavers lay the new hot-mix asphalt. The same guidance asks for a smooth surface that will not pond water.
Lots and private roads here face the same freeze and thaw as driveways. NOAA's 30-year averages for the Louisville airport show about 74 days a year with a low of 32 or colder. On all but about 13 of those days, the high climbs back above freezing. The rating guide says water in open cracks softens the pavement and starts new cracks.
A parking lot with a sound base takes an overlay, after milling along the curbs where needed. Wide alligator cracking calls for parking lot paving from the base up instead. An overlay covers the old lines, so the lot gets striped again as part of the job.
The rating guide fits private roads and subdivision streets best, because it was written for roads. A road with surface wear and a sound base takes an overlay. Deep ruts call for milling first, and a failed base calls for private road paving from the base up.
