A Clean Cut Before the New Asphalt Goes Down

Asphalt milling cuts the worn top layer off old pavement before new asphalt goes on. SIA Paving mills asphalt for homes and businesses within about 45 miles of our Sellersburg shop. Milling comes before an overlay or a full repave. Where a job needs it, milling is the first step of asphalt paving in Sellersburg and the towns around it.

Our two 40-inch skid steer planer attachments handle edges and smaller areas. For a big parking lot or a long private road, we bring in a large milling machine. When the base under a worn surface is sound, milling leads into asphalt resurfacing. We look at the job and put the quote in writing.

What We Handle

  • Two 40-inch skid steer planer attachments for edges and smaller areas
  • A large milling machine brought in for big parking lots and long roads
  • Milling ahead of an asphalt overlay or a full repave
  • Tie-in cuts where new asphalt meets a garage floor or the street
  • Cut depth set to fit the new asphalt and the slope it needs
  • Full-depth removal when the old asphalt is past an overlay
  • Church and business parking lots, plus private roads and lanes
  • A written quote after we look at the job

Skid Steer Planers or a Large Milling Machine?

The size of the job decides the tool. A 40-inch planer suits a driveway or the edge of a parking lot. It also fits spots too tight for a big machine.

Big jobs ahead of parking lot paving or private road paving get the large milling machine we bring in. A federal recycling guide says a milling machine's main feature is a spinning drum lined with cutting teeth. These machines can hold depth and profile with accuracy.

Edges need their own cut. The Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) has a name for the cut where an overlay meets a driveway: approach milling. Its design manual says the cut gives the overlay a smooth connection. Our planers cut the same kind of tie-in at a garage floor or along the street.

Asphalt Milling Depth and Grade Around Sellersburg

Depth is set job by job. INDOT's design manual says the cut should make room for the new asphalt. It should also remove damaged asphalt and reach the slope the surface needs. Where cracking runs through every layer, the cut goes all the way to the base.

Grade matters as much as depth. The federal recycling guide describes milling as a cut that restores grade and slope and takes out bumps and ruts. INDOT's field manual warns that a surface set wrong at a gutter or drain grate can pond water.

Standing water is a winter problem here. NOAA normals for nearby Scottsburg count about 114 days a year with a low of 32 degrees or colder. On most of them, the afternoon climbs back above freezing. The USDA soil survey rates most of the silt loams around Sellersburg high for frost action.

What Happens to the Old Asphalt After Milling?

The material that comes off is called reclaimed asphalt pavement, or RAP. A federal highway guide on recycled materials says crushed and screened RAP is high-quality stone still coated in asphalt binder.

Very little of it goes to waste. A national asphalt industry survey sponsored by the Federal Highway Administration tracked the 2024 season. It found more than 96 percent of reclaimed asphalt went back into new asphalt pavement. The rest went to other uses, such as aggregate base.

For state highway work, INDOT's field manual has each hot-mix design list its RAP content. That number shows how much old asphalt goes into each new mix.

FAQ

Asphalt Milling Questions, Answered

Common questions about asphalt milling around Sellersburg and the nearby towns of Southern Indiana. If yours is not here, call or text and ask.

Is asphalt milling the same as asphalt grinding?
Yes, both words name the same work. The Federal Highway Administration's recycling guide also calls it cold milling or cold planing. The machine's drum of cutting teeth grinds the old pavement off.
Why mill first instead of paving over the old asphalt?
Each new layer raises the surface, and milling first keeps the finished height right at curbs and drains. A federal brief on tack coats says milling removes the top material, which traffic and weather wear the most. It adds that milling helps the overlay bond to the existing pavement.
Does milling fix a failed base?
Milling takes off asphalt, and a failed base sits below it. INDOT's design manual says enough pavement must stay under the cut to support the new asphalt. When it is not there, we mill the old asphalt off down to the base. Then the base is graded and compacted before new hot-mix asphalt goes down.
What happens between the milling and the paving?
Milling leaves fine material behind, and a federal tack coat brief says it can be hard to sweep off. The goal is a clean, dry surface. Then a tack coat goes on, the glue that bonds the new asphalt to the milled layer. On state work, INDOT requires a tack coat on milled asphalt before the overlay.
Where do you do asphalt milling?
Our milling work covers about 45 miles around Sellersburg. That reaches from Jeffersonville and New Albany out to Madison and Seymour. The full town list is on our service areas page.
How much does asphalt milling cost?
The price depends on the size of the area and the depth of the cut. Access matters too, and so does whether the planers or the large mill fit the job. The asphalt work that follows shapes the price as well. Call or text (812) 913-8411, and we look at the job and put the quote in writing.
